Research has found that loneliness can lead to feelings of low self–esteem, anxiety, and depression. Those who feel lonely may have difficulty forming meaningful connections with others and be more susceptible to developing mental health issues. Some studies have found that loneliness can be just as damaging to mental health as poverty or physical illness. In addition, loneliness can affect how people cope with stress, leading to a greater risk of developing depression and anxiety.

Creating authentic connections is an important part of life, as it helps us feel connected to those around us and improves our self-esteem and mental health. Authentic connections are the foundation of meaningful relationships and can lead to greater personal and professional success. They can provide us with support, companionship, and a sense of belonging. Here are six tips to help you make authentic connections.

1. Be Yourself

It’s easy to put up a front when you’re trying to make a good impression, but it’s important to be honest and authentic. People can tell when you’re not being genuine and it can make them feel uncomfortable. Instead, be yourself and let people get to know the real you.

2. Show Interest

Authentic connections are built on mutual interest and respect. Showing genuine interest in the person you’re talking to will make them feel valued and appreciated. Ask questions and actively listen to their answers.  This means listening more than you speak and really trying to understand the perspective of the other person. Listening is a key way to build trust and create a stronger connection with someone.

3. Be Open

Being open and vulnerable can be difficult, but it is essential to building an authentic connection. This means being willing to share your true thoughts and feelings with them (even if they don’t always agree) and being willing to connect with the other person on a deeper level. Sharing your thoughts and feelings in an honest way will encourage the other person to do the same, too.

4. Offer Support

Authentic connections are built on trust and support. Offer to help when you can and be a good listener when someone needs to talk. This will create a sense of mutual trust and respect.

5. Be Positive

Authentic connections and friendships are strengthened when we focus on the positive. Look for the best in other people and make them feel appreciated. This will create a bond of mutual understanding and respect.

6. Be Present

When you spend time with someone you want a deeper connection with, remember to be present. Put your phone down and away and truly be with them in the present moment. Giving them your full attention will help in developing a more authentic connection.
